This castle is a Grade II Listed building and was built in 1826 by George Walmesley, a Liverpool/Manchester businessman. The crenelated castle was built on the site of an earlier 1700's house with a unique type of sandstone called 'Ashlar'. In the 1920's it was greatly remodelled by his namesake grandson who made improvements to the gardens as well.
