The Original Strickland's Frozen Custard has been delighting Akron, Ohio residents since 1936. Bill and Florence Strickland built the stand during the Great Depression near the Akron Fulton Airport. In those days, with money tight, many folks would gather near the airport to watch airplanes take off and land. It was cheap and fun entertainment. Bill and Florence thought that, even in the midst of hard times, everyone could spare a nickel for the occassional ice cream cone. Decades later, it is obvious that Bill and Florence were right.

During his years as an Akron Pure Milk employee, Bill developed his own rich recipe of cream, eggs, sugar and other ingredients. With his formula perfected, Bill turned his attention to finding an ice cream machine that would quickly freeze the ice cream, while limiting the air whipped into the product. The result was Strickland's award-winning frozen custard.

Family legend is that Strickland's originally served only one flavor - Vanilla - and that customers were served by car hops. As time went by and business grew, chocolate was added, and later the Flavor of the Day. The store also moved from car hops to counter service.
