One of the few official Confederate cemeteries in the North.

Erected by the United States to mark the burial place of Confederate Soldiers and Sailors who died at Point Lookout, Md., while prisoners of war and were there buried to the number of 3384, but whose remains were subsequently removed, either to their respective homes, or to this cemetery where the individual graves cannot now be identified.

The cemetery became a lightning rod for controversy in the 1990s when it was revealed that the Confederate battle flag was flown at the cemetery alongside the U.S. flag, which drew widespread criticism even though it is the flag the cemetery occupants fought under.
