The process of conservation started with the declaration of Dibru Reserve Forest in 1890 and Saikhowa Reserve Forest in 1928. In 1986, Dibru-Saikhowa Wildlife Sanctuary was declared by including both the reserve forests with an area of 640 sq. kms. which was finally notified to 340 sq. kms. in 1995. The sanctuary was given the status of a National Park in 1999. Nestled in between the Brahmaputra and the Dibru rivers, Dibru-Saikhowa exhibits the properties of both the Indian and Malayan sub-regions. Located near the Eastern Himalayan foothills, it is one of most vibrant wilderness on earth also known for its scenic pristine beauty.
The park has 36 species of mammals like Tiger, Elephant, Clouded Leopard, Jungle Cat, Bears, Small Indian Civet, Squirrels, Chinese Pangolin, Gangetic Dolphin, Slow Loris, Assamese Macaque, Rhesus Macaque, Capped Langur, Hoolock Gibbon, Wild Pigs, Sambar, Barking Deer, Water Buffalo, Feral Horses etc.
The park is identified as an important bird area with over 382 species of birds like Greater Adjutant Stork, Lesser Adjutant Stork, Greater Crested Grebe, Large Cormorant, Open bill Stork, Black necked Stork, Large Whistling Teal, Grey leg Goose, Grey-headed Fishing Eagle, Griffon Vulture, Osprey, Crested Serpent Eagle, Spot Billed Pelican, White Winged Wood Duck, Baer's Pochard, Greater Spotted Eagle, Pale Capped Pigeon, Great Pied Hornbill, Marsh Babbler, Jerdon's Babbler, Black Breasted Parrot bill, etc.
The park was primarily meant for the conservation of Whitewinged wood duck in its natural habitat but it is also the famous for its bright coloured wild horses known as Feral Horses. These horses are the successive off-springs of the tamed horses that had escaped from the Army camps during World War II and those that were let loose after the devastating 1950 earthquake.
The Guijan entry point of the park is located at about 10 kms north of Tinsukia town. Whereas Dhola entry point is about 50kms away from Tinsukia town.
