Remains of a substantial medieval pele tower and another stone structure, at least part of which is built of re-used Roman material, on a promontory defended by ditches. The second structure may represent the remains of a gatehouse or an ornamental gateway. Three walls of the tower, which probably dates from C14, survive, standing up to 5m high. It is thought that the tower may have been deliberately dismantled some time before 1856. The Roman material included in the fabric of the gate/gatehouse may indicate the existence of a Roman shrine on the site. A Roman altar re-used as a quoin has been removed to Staward Manor. The gateway remains are sometimes described as a bastle.
