The Old Baile (York)

This 11th century earthwork motte and bailey fortress was built to guard the River Ouse and the Vale of York. It was later incorporated into the famous city walls after supporting a range of timber buildings. Later, it was further utilized as a raised gun emplacement by Parliamentarian forces during the mid-17th century Civil War.
