Rockingham Castle

United Kingdom / England / Corby /
 fortification, motte-and-bailey castle, gatehouse

This 11th century earthwork motte and bailey stronghold was constructed in the Norman layout of two baileys and the motte in-between. Established by King William I, it was a Royal fortress for nearly 500 years. In the 11th century, King William II had erected a stone castle, adding a shell keep and a curtain wall. Near to this is an impressive Edwardian gatehouse built in 1270. After 1485, the castle fell into neglect and was subsequently transformed into a Tudor house. Parts of the fortress were slighted during the Civil War in 1646. Open to the public.
