Named after the Koger family who included this island as part of their large plantation during the antebellum period. William Koger was a wealthy plantation owner who purchased this island as part of a 150 acre track that he added to his holdings. The island was much larger before parts of the river became flooded by Tennessee Valley Authority in 1938. This was a controlled flooding process to decrease damaging floods caused by natural floods. It is said that the island is rich in Native Indian lore.
