This island has been used throughout history for agricultural purposes. The first owner of the island was Ben Sherrod who purchased the 600 acre parcel in 1821. The earliest settlers in the area called it Cane Island becasue of the abundance of cane growing on the island. The name was shown as Tinnis's Island on maps of 1844. Alabama Governor Robert Miller Patton was one of the last owners of the island before the Tennessee valley Authority (TVA) deemed the land as an uninhabitable becasue of the potential for regular flooding. The island is now U.S. Government Property administered by TVA. The Singing River Bridge crosses the Tennessee River by crossing over the island. wikimapia.org/18431/Singing-River-Bridge
