Semnan (Persian: سمنان, Semnān) is one of the 30 provinces of Iran. It is located in the northern part of the country, and its capital is Semnan. The province of Semnan covers an area of 96,816 square kilometers, 5.9% of the total area of Iran, and stretches along the Alborz mountain range from north and borders Dasht-e Kavir desert from south. Semnan borders Golestan and Mazandaran provinces to the north, Tehran and Qom provinces to the west, Isfahan province to the south and Khorasan-e Razavi province to the east. It has 4 counties, Semnan, Damghan, Shahrood and Garmsar. In 2005 the province had a population of 589,742 while the population for the city of Semnan was 119,778, and for Shahroud, which is the largest city of the province, 131,831.

Semnan is divided into two parts, a mountainous region and the plains at the foot of the mountains. The former offers a scope for recreational activities as well as being a source for minerals, whereas the latter encompasses some ancient cities of Iran as one of the capitals of the Parthian empire was located here.
