Oregon's last logging railroad, the Oregon, California and Eastern, used a pair of switchbacks here to get over the hill. The line was built during the 1920s, and by using the switchbacks the grade was kept to 1.63% against westbound traffic. A planned 1,300' tunnel through Bly Mountain was never built. Weyerhaeuser shut down the OC&E during 1991, with the last run over the hill taking place on Sept. 25.

The former OC&E rail line has now been converted into the OC&E Woods Line State Trail.
