Hyanggyo is a local school annexed to a Confucian shrine where Confucianism is taught.
Hyanggyo of Goheung was founded in the 23rd year of King Sejong''s reign (1441) to educate Confucian students and local residents. Damaged during the Second Japanese Invasion in the 30th year of King Seonjo''s reign (1597), it was repaired with the help of Confucian students in Seongdong town and was moved to the present site in 1695
The Hyanggyo is composed of two parts: the one is a lecture space including. Oesam outdoor gate, Myeongryun auditorium, east and west dormitories, the other is a ritual space including Naesam indoor gate, Daeseongjeon, east and west Mu. This structure forms jeonhakhumyo, which means that lecture halls are placed in the front and tombs in the rear. sujik house, near Hyanggyo, was to house Confucian students.
