Prior to I-35, the main north-south route for eastern Minnesota was Hwy 61, which actually runs somewhat parallel to the Mississippi River into Louisiana. This curved stretch, in use today, replaced the straightaway section of narrow dangerous highway. It is still visible both in the air and on the ground. Several pieces of private property have this former stretch of road running through them.
