The Barbour County was the 17th ship of 20 Newport Class of Tank Landing Ships and served with the US Navy from 1972 to 1992 when she was decommissioned and loaned to Spain for trial & evaluation purposes of this class of LST. Spain later bought two of her sisterships which are now active in their navy. The Barbour County was returned to the US Navy in late 1992 and was placed into the Reserve Fleet at Pearl Harbor NISMF.
She was removed from the Reserve Fleet and sunk in this location on April 6th, 2004 in 2,560 fathoms.
