  • Petone: Situated on the northern shore of Wellington Harbour. A major suburb of the city of Lower Hutt. The name is a corruption of the Maori 'Pito-one' meaning at the end of the beach. The name probably refers to Te Ati Awa chief, Te Puni's pa which was situated at the western end of the beach. Petone was the site of the first European settlement in the Wellington area. The first settlers arrived in 'Aurora' 22 January 1840 (now commemorated as Wellington Anniversary Day). Aurora was followed closely by the ships 'Cuba' and 'Oriental' (all local street names). A settlement called Britannia was planned to be built on land purchased from Te Puni. The site proved to be swampy and prone to flooding. It was abandoned after only a few months and the bulk of the settlers moved south to Thorndon on Lambton Harbour. After the arrival of the railway line from Wellington in 1874, Petone became a thriving working class borough. Meat processing and car assembly were major industries until they closed in the 1980's. Thereafter, Petone's fortunes suffered a decline, until it was incorporated into Lower Hutt, during a period of Local Government reform in 1989. Since then Petone has rejuvenated itself and is known locally for its cafes and shops.
