military, shipwreck, destroyer (ship), United States Navy
The Ingersoll was the 28th member of the Spruance Class of Destroyers and commissioned into US Navy Service in 1980, serving thru 1998 based out of both San Diego and Pearl Harbor. As the trial Destroyer for installation of Armored Box Launcher systems for Tomahawk Cruise Missiles, she experienced a bad tendency to roll heavily even in moderate seas, as the weight of the boxes made the ship unbalanced topside. The later advent of the VLS system led to the Ingersoll being decommissioned earlier than many of her older siblings, as by the time the Navy began removing the Armored Box Launchers from its ships the Ingersoll was too old to merit the cost of refitting her.
She remained in the Pearl Harbor NISMF until July 29th, 2003 when she was sunk in this location in live fire excercises.
