Montaña de Halcones means Mountain of Falcons in English, but that phrase does not seem to be used to name this mountain. Its peculiar shape is the result of erosion; for eons before 1730 AD ocean waves wore away most of the western portion. Lava flows then surrounded the remnant. The government has declared this place El Monumento Natural del Islote de Halcones.

Barbary Falcons (Falco pelegrinoides), a close relative of the Peregrine (Falco peregrinus) are found here. A subspecies of the Common Kestrel (Falco tinnunculus dacotiae) is found here as well.

Other species found here include the Canarian Egyptian Vulture (Neophron percnopterus majorensis), or Guirre; the Canary Barn Owl (Tyto alba gracilirostris); the Berthelot’s Pipit, (Anthus berthelotii). The Atlantic Lizard (Gallotia atlantica) and the East Canary Gecko (Tarentola angustimentalis) are native here.
