This is the original Erie Canal, which ran through Rochester. The enlarged canal bypassed the city of Rochester and was routed south of the city. This is in Pittsford, east of Rochester, where the old and new diverged. During WW II, boats were built here and floated down the Erie. The ruins of the shipbuilding site can still be seen. The old towpath crosses French Road, behind Wegmans, and leads to the old lock 62.
