First developed in the 17th century, the harbour at Whitehaven was a key shipping port to America in the days of sail, but in the 18th century began to be overtaken by Liverpool and Clydeside. It has little commercial traffic today, but is increasingly being used as a marina. The quays have been decorated with a variety of artistic works, ranging from a long neon-lit "wave" to shoals of tiny metal fish swimming in the cobbles.
