Mahe, an important place on the western coast situated between Calicut and Thalassery, has been a part of the erstwhile French Colony in India headquartered at Puducherry. This railway station was constructed at Mahe, very close to the border between British and French occupied territories, apparently with a view to serve both the colonial powers. Ever since then its existence and importance remained linked with Mahe, now a part of Union Territory of Puduchery.

Being a part of U/T of Puduchery, there are many Govt Offices/Departments in Mahe. Lot of Tamil speaking people (Govt employees, their families etc) are putting up in Mahe as well as natives of Mahe residing in Puduchery.

Today a number of passengers board from and elite at Mahe Stn by every train that stops here. Also the historical background and fame of Mahe as a former French colony attract foreign tourists. Many come to know about Mahe when they reach Puducherry and make it a point to visit this place.
