It is one of the biggest and most well-known Medieval villages in the island of Chios, in Greece. It is also the seat of the municipality of Mastichochoria, which is well known for the production of Masticha, from where the name derives. The village has been designated to be a fortress and took its name from a defense tower that it is located at the center of the village, where people used to take refuge in case of danger. Pyrgi is also known for its unique black and white graffito technique (the "Xysta"), used to decorate the exteriors of many houses, especially those who are located in the square of the village.
