Arnold Loop was constructed in 1914 and is on the former Western Pacific line running between Salt Lake City and the San Francisco Bay area. Union Pacific acquired this line in 1982 and continues to run freight trains over it. BNSF Railway also operates through here, as does Amtrak's California Zephyr passenger train.
Another contributor wrote that this is "the highest point on the Western Pacific line between Salt Lake City and San Francisco," but a check of elevations on a topographic map shows that the railroad's crossing of nearby Silver Zone Pass is higher (almost 5900 feet), while the loop is at about 5600 feet.
Access to the loop is via the Shafter exit of Interstate 80 and a rough dirt road.
