Lake Johnson is a man-made lake in South Raleigh, NC. It is bordered by Lake Dam Rd, Avent Ferry Rd, and I-40. No swimming is allowed, but visitors may fish from a wooden bridge that is about 10 feet in width and 1/12 mile in length. There is also a staffed visitors center providing canoe and paddleboat services.
The trail is marked at every 1/4 mile. There are several entrances to the trail. Two, including the main entrance, are on Avent Ferry Rd. The other is on Lake Dam Rd near the intersection of Avent Ferry Rd. As a warning to those who may become short of breath or want to push wheelchairs or strollers on the trail, the section running along I-40 has a few steep hills that you may want to avoid.
Recently, the lake spillway suffered damage from heavy rains brought on by Hurricane Alberto in June 2006. Water had to be drained and now the lake levels are down several feet. Currently there are large pipes in place to bypass the spillway until reconstruction is complete.
