vertical-lift bridge / lift bridge  Add category

One of several vertical lift bridges on the Welland Canal, the Allanburg Bridge gained notoriety in August 2001 when the operator lowered the bridge span too early as the M/V Windoc was passing beneath it. The resulting accident caused severe damage to the Windoc, which lost its bridge and funnel, and was set afire. The bridge sustained minor damage.

Currently the matter is being fought over in several courts, the Windoc is in mothballs and the bridge has returned to operation.
