  • Jarrel was ground zero for a huge F5 twister in 1997. 25 died.
  • Wasn't ground zero or the death toll would have been in the hundreds. The F5 hit the Double Creek Estates subdivision to the northwest. 38 new, well-constructed frame houses were in Double Creek. 0 survived, with most being blown completely to smithereens by the nightmare scenario of an F5 tornado moving through a neighborhood at a 10 mph crawl. 27 people were killed, the majority of which were sheltering in their bathtubs and interior closets and had no hope of survival against an F5. One guy had a storm shelter so his wife and kid survived. The rest got pretty much torn to pieces along with their houses and thrown for miles. Lousy way to go.
