Yokjido, Yokji Island, is one of the largest islands, being the largest of the Yeonhwa archipelagin, in the Hallyeohaesang National Marine Park, and as one of the furthest from the mainland. Yokjido has plenty of hiking and walking trails. All the island's beaches are pebbled, the largest being Deokdong Beach is full of black stones called "bamjagal", night pebbles.

Yokjido used to be called "Nok-do", Deer Island, because of the large number of deer that roamed the island, but the population was greatly reduced during the Japanese occupation in the16th century when sailors began hunting the deer for their antlers to send to the Japanese royal palace.

Fish farming is the principal source of income, and ground farming, especially of sweet potatoes, is prominent.
