Jindo Hyanggyo

Korea (South) / Chollanam / Mokpo / Gyodong-ri, 275

The Jindo Hyanggyo (Local Confucian Academy) originally built on the east side of Jindo-eup Castle in 1437, was later moved to the vicinity of Orimjeon in 1475, burned to the ground in 1597, rebuilt in 1623, and was re-located to the present location in 1656. Jindo Hyanggyo is on 1,000m²/¼acre of land surrounded by a stone wall.

During the Jeongyujaeran, the memorial tablet was moved to a rock cave in Mt. Cheolma. After the end of war, it was moved back to its present place in 1656.

Jeongyo, the managing director of this Confucian temple, is re-elected every 2 years. Today the hyanggyo holds Confucian rituals twice a year, but it was a leading educational institution during the Joseon Dynasty.

Jindo Hyanggyo is South Jeolla Province Cultural Heritage #127.
