Brick Head 3
2004
by James Tyler
"Brickhead 3" provides an extraordinary work of art in one of Indianapolis' fastest growing cultural destinations. The sculpture is massive in height and weight, and is activated as viewers approach. The soundtrack paints an auditory picture of the human "information processing" mechanism, through a three-track orchestrated sound construction.
In the Brickhead series, by sculpture James Tyler, the human head is the reoccuring theme. Tyler's brick constructions bring to mind familiar imagery we associate with past cultures and ancient civilizations. While the form is timeless, the sound component is what plants these works in the 21st century. Using familiar sounds, Tyler engages the viewer and draws his audience in. In "Brickhead 3", the soundtrack depicts a "calculating mind" with references to thought patterns that are on one hand permanent, and another fleeting.
James Tyler is an Indianapolis native, currently living in Nyack, New York. He attended Shortridge High School and Herron School of Art. He first moved to Boston for a decade, then to Manhattan, where he maintained a studio for ten years. Tyler designs and fabricates all of his own work. He recently participated in the NCECA 2004 gallery exhibition here in Indianapolis, showcasing recent works and the third installment of the "Birkhead" series. The artist is represented locally by Ruschman Gallery.
The "Brickhead 3" sculpture is located in Davlan Park, on the 400 block of Massachusetts Avenue in downtown Indianapolis. Recently designated as one of five Cultural Districts, the Avenue has long been recognized as one of the city's premier visual and performing arts destinations. It is home to art galleries, unique shops, cutting-edge restaurants, theatres, live music and many other amenities that enhance its reputation as a cultural destination. In addition to these attractions, the Avenue plays host to gallery walks, street fairs and outdoor concerts. "Brickhead 3" is located in front of Elements Restaurant, next to the walkway connecting Alabama Street and Massachusetts Avenue.
The Riley Area Development Corporation has agreed to take ownership of the "Brickhead 3" sculpture upon permanent installation in the park. RADC will ensure and maintain the sculpture, as it currently does for other public art pieces along the venue.
