Boyuk Zira Island (Nargin)

Boyuk Zira (Böyük Zirə), also known as Nargin, is an uninhabited island off the Bay of Baku, Azerbaijan.

Boyuk Zira Island is part of the Baku Archipelago, which consists of the following islands: Boyuk Zira, Dash Zira, Kichik Zira (Qum or Sandy Island), Zenbil, Sangi-Mugan, Chikil, Qara Su, Khara Zira, Gil, Ignat Dash and a few smaller ones.

Boyuk Zira is the biggest island that separates the Bay of Baku from the sea south of the Absheron Peninsula. It has a length of 3.1 m, and a width of 900 m. The northwestern side of the island is vertical and steep. There is little vegetation.

Caspian seals, sturgeon, and numerous types of birds, like teal ducks, herring gulls, and grebes are some of the species that can be found on and around Boyuk Zira Island.

Boyuk Zira Island was called the Azerbaijani gulag in a period of Stalin repressions. It was the place of mass shootings and burying of Stalin-Beria terror victims, who were brought there in barges. Ten thousands of people condemned by judicial communist “trios” were shot in this island, far from the eyes. It was happened, that the barges full of people were sunk in order to save cartridges. According to stories of the Azerbaijani scuba drivers, they find remains of people, tortured by the communist regime, tied with chains under water, up to now.

According to information of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Azerbaijan, it is planned to build a modern recreation place in Boyuk Zira Island. Price of a project called “The dream island” is valued at 2 milliards of dollars. The complex will include one thousand villas, three thousand buildings, an international university, a hospital, golf-ground with a total area of 100 ha and other administrative and public buildings and complexes.
