The place is settled since the Urnfield culture. It is first mentioned as "villa publica" in 748. At that time it was a palatium of the Agilolfing dynasty, and 40 years later it became a carolingian palatium. In 876/877 a monastery was founded by King Carloman of the carolingian dynasty. Since 1489 it is target of pilgrimage.
