Williams Field Airport

Antarctica / Sector claimed by New Zealand / Scott - permanent station of New Zealand /
 airport, interesting place, closed

Williams Field (or "Willy Field") includes two snow runways usable only by aircraft with ski-equipped landing gear. Prior to the 2009-2010 summer it was McMurdo Station's main airfield for on-continent flights, but has since been inactive except as a backup airfield and as the base for NASA's Long Duration Balloon Program.
As per NOTAM M0040/15, AERODROME CLOSED and as per 51/52/54, Runways and navigation systems are completely withdrawn.
The Airport doesn't exist anymore.

The field is named for Richard T. Williams, a U.S. Navy construction driver who drowned when his Caterpillar tractor fell through sea ice in January 1956.

Comments

  • Williams Field (NZWD ) is the primary airfield at McMurdo for SKI-equipped aircraft, such as LC-130, DHC6 and DC3. It operates from mid-October to mid-February, is served by a Control Tower (Willie Tower) and extensive flight support services. McMurdo Weather provides forecasting and observation services. Look for NOTAMs under NZWD.
