Of McMurdo Station's three airfields, Pegasus Field is the only one with a permanent ice runway usable by wheeled aircraft year-round -- unlike the annual Sea Ice Runway which melts in the summer, and the deeply snow-covered Williams Field which is limited to ski-equipped aircraft.
The name of this airfield comes from the crashed C-121 plane "Pegasus" which lies partially buried to the west.
Until 2002, Pegasus Field had a "blue ice" runway with an exposed glacial ice surface. It now has a "white-ice" runway with a thin, highly compacted snow cover that protects the underlying glacial ice from solar heating.
