Regions Tower, formerly One Indiana Square, is a 36-story building in downtown Indianapolis, Indiana. It is used by various companies for offices. The building opened in 1970 as the headquarters of Indiana National Bank. The building now serves as the Indiana headquarters for Regions Financial Corporation. It is the third-tallest building in Indianapolis and was the tallest in Indianapolis from 1970 until 1982 when OneAmerica Tower was completed.
The building has gone through two dramatic exterior renovations. The first facade renovation, completed in 1992, involved recladding cracking exterior marble with aluminum. The $10 million project also included new cornice lighting and banding to reflect a more contemporary architectural style.
Strong winds from severe thunderstorms blew out several windows on the building's north and west sides on April 2, 2006. Streets surrounding the tower were closed to prevent injury from falling debris. High wind gusts hampered the effort to begin assessing the magnitude of the physical and structural damage until two days later. This was not the first instance of high winds blowing out the building's windows and owners announced on May 19, 2006 that an entirely new facade would be constructed over the next year, replacing the damaged curtainwall.
Regions Tower was originally conceived to include two additional towers, one of approximately 20 floors at the southwest corner of Delaware and New York streets, and the other of approximately 12 floors at the southeast corner of New York and Pennsylvania streets. These towers were never built. Regions Tower was constructed on the site previously occupied by the Knights of Pythias Building and the 200 block of Massachusetts Avenue. This diagonal street was vacated from the Ohio Street/Pennsylvania Street intersection to the New York Street/Delaware Street intersection at that time to make way for the new tower.
