  • Despite the fact that even in some early records, as in the Charter of Holy Cross monastery in the time of King Donal Mor O'Brien at the end of the 12th century, the name of the hamlet which gives its name to the parish is written as if it derived from the Irish name given above, I believe further investigation will indicate the name in Irish is not as above, but rather, Bealach Achaille. Respectfully, Joseph T. Gleason III The landmarked thatched house adjacent to the burial ground and the medieval church ruins in the hamlet was the house in which my great grandfather James Gleeson was born and from which he left for New York in 1866. The house and barn was held by his father, Michael Gleeson, with Richard Hogan. The family were wheelrights, carriage builders. The house went to the eldest son, Patrick, a county coucillor and ex-officio member of the first library committee, and the house reportedly went out of the name sometime between 1920 and 1936.
