The area south of Mack Avenue to I-75 was the home to one of the first urban renewal schemes in Detroit. Older homes were demolished and replaced by modern townhouses. By 1938, 701 homes had been completed. Expansion continued up to 1942 with the construction of two six story apartment buildings and more townhouses. In 1951 more rowhouses were constructed on the southern part of the area along with six 14 story towers, and were named the Brewster Douglass Homes.
Riddled with crime and decay the northernmost part of the complex was demolished in 1991 and in its place rose the present two story, 250 unit townhouse complex operated by the Detroit Housing Commission.
The remaining portions of the original development are scheduled to be demolished.
