A hammer pond (hence the name!). Originally built to supply a head of water to a water powered hammer mill. Many such mills were situated in this part of the High Weald when iron production was economic. The hammers were required for processing the smelted iron. This industry has now long since died out, and the ponds (like this one) have become the domains of fishermen. A similar pond is located a few hundred meters NW.
