A replica pump is placed somewhere here as a memorial to John Snow, a Victorian physician who was investigating an outbreak of cholera around Broad Street (now Broadwick Street). In 1856 he found out (using a map showing where the deaths were) that the majority of deaths happened to people who used the Broad Street Pump, and when he asked that the handle should be taken off the pump, the outbreak stopped. It was later found out that sewage in a cesspit had been seeping into the channel which provided water for the pump. It helped scientists slowly understand how diseases were caused.
