The Indian Astronomical Observatory, operated by the Indian Institute of Astrophysics, stands on a peak in the western Himalayas near the village of Hanle, in eastern Ladakh, India. Located at 32°46′46″N, 78°57′51″E and 4,500 m (14,764 feet), it is the highest telescope in the world. Before it became operational in 2001, the highest telescope was at the Meyer-Womble Observatory.
