Hemis Monastery Territory

Hemis Monastery existed before the 11th century ,Situated 45 km from Leh, the monastery was re-established in 1672 by the Ladakhi king Sengge Namgyal. The annual Hemis festival honoring Padmasambhava is held here in early June.

Seat of the 12th Gyalwang Drukpa in Ladakh. Richest and biggest monastery in Ladakh. Belongs to the Drukpa Kagyu lineage known for many "crazy wisdom masters" like famous Kunleg Drukpa. Famous for the annual mask dances already described in Lama Anagarika Govindas book "Way of the white clouds".
