military, gun, fortification, artillery battery
Two 6" M1898 Armstrong guns in casemates were mounted here from 1917 to 1925.
Unlike all the other fixed coast artillery emplacements on Oahu prior to WWII, Battery Boyd and the companion Battery Adair on the other end of Ford Island were designed to protect the Pearl Harbor anchorage from a land invasion from the north.
In the event of a foreign invasion, Ford Island and the Diamond Head crater were to be rallying points/strongpoints from which defenders could hold off any invaders until reinforcements could arrive from the U.S.
