This place is known as the Kolk. It is pot-hole, kolk in Dutch, and was formed around 1548 after a stormflood that broke a dike. If you have a look on the map, you see the distance between this place and the Lauwerszee, now Lauwersmeer. The soil in this area is called heavy clay, zware klei. You see the gray coloured furrows in autumn and spring, when the fields are ploughed.

In the memory of locals: From the street you could see the water, that looked like a little lake. For children around 1955 it was a mysterious place.
