  • The largest of the Phoenix area lakes (larger than Canyon and Saguaro Lakes) but smaller than Roosevelt which is kind of a long pull for Phoenix residents. Gravel road for quite a ways each way. Due to this gravel road, many do not go to this lake. Therefore, open headers are allowed on boats and almost all noise restrictions are lifted at Apache Lake. The sheriff's department patrols the other lakes like hawks and writes tickets right and left for any noise violations and other minor things. One can always launch at Apache and this is due to the road system being what it is. Graded gravel and maintained but makes your car, truck, and boat a mess. Canyon Lake and Saguaro get filled up by 8 AM on weekend days (seriously) and one must wait until another boater leaves as the parking lots hold just so many vehicles. Boating in Arizona is absolutely fabulous but make sure you are at the lake very early. Otherwise you are going to sit.
