Built in 1957 as part of the "Pole Vault" troposcatter communication system, the Hopedale site operated as part of the Ballistic Missile Early Warning System (BMEWS) Rearward Communications System (RCS) through the mid-1970's. Serving as one of seven stations in the RCS, Hopedale provided a link in communications moving up and down the system betweeen Thule Air Force Base in Greenland to the terminal site at Goose Air Force Base by means of 227 and 149 mile shots to Goose Air Force Base and Saglek Air Station respectively.

After communications on the BMEWS shifted to satellite communication, the mission of the Hopedale site became redundant and transmissions ceased. The site was demolished in the early 1980's but the concrete footings for the troposcatter billboard antenna and transmission horns remain onsite.
