  • This place is also known as es-Sahira Cemetery and is said to date to the time of Salah ed-Din (12th cent. CE). This hill's rocky southern escarpment, created by ancient quarrying, faces the Old City walls and is often referred to by Western Protestant Christians as “Gordon’s Calvary”; the name derives from the 19th-cent. British General Charles Gordon who suggested it as the place of Jesus' crucifixion.
