Bodelwyddan Castle began its history as a manor house built by the Humphreys family of Anglesey in about 1460. In the late seventeenth century, Bodelwyddan was bought from the Humphreys by Sir William Williams, the first Welsh Speaker of the British House of Commons. The castle owes its current appearance to Sir William's descendants, particularly Sir John Hay Williams who reconstructed the castle starting in 1830.
The Castle is now an outstation of the National Portrait Gallery and is open to the public.
