Pu'u Mahana is a tuff cone produced more than 49,000 years ago (the limit of radiocarbon dating) by the explosive combination of lava and groundwater. The olivine crystals that make up Green Sand Beach are eroded from the cutaway interior of Pu'u Mahana.
