Founded in 1666 by Puritans, who named it New Ark, a reference to the Ark of Biblical description, a haven from religious persecution from the Church of England. Many Corporations are headquartered here including Prudential and IDT. It is nicknamed the "brick city" for the extensive impermeable surfaces related to its development.

  • I thought it was named after Newark-on-Trent, Lincolnshire, England.
  • I meant Nottinghamshire. But I was wrong anyway.
  • It may be named in reference to "New Ark" but it certainly is not pronounced that way...it is pronounced "Newwork"
