Ninole Hills are the eroded remains of an older section of Mauna Loa about 100,000 to 300,000 years old. The hills were formed during a massive slide of the southeastern flank of Mauna Loa into the sea. Since then, younger lava flows have flowed around and through the hills, rebuilding the surface of Mauna Loa lower than the original surface. The Ninole Hills are also known as the Ninole Volcanic Series.
