Geography.
Tercan, formerly known as Derjan or Mamakhatun is a city and center of Derjan district of Erzurum Province of today's Turkey. Located on the Erzrum-Erzincan road, on the right bank of the Tuzlu (Mananaghi) river tributary of the Western Euphrates.
History.
Founded in pre-Christian Armenia's era as a town named Derjan (Armenian: Դերջան) a center of eponymous gavar (district) of Bardzr Hayk (Upper Armenia) ashkhar (province). In Bagratid Armenia period ( IX-X cc.) was a provincial town near Buzantian border prominent by being one of the locations where Tondrakyan movement took place. Up to 1890th Hamidian massacres was Armenian populated town named Mamakhatun (Armenian: Մամախաթուն) in Derjan Sanjak of Erzrum Vilayet of Ottoman Empire. In 1890-1915 period had Armenian quarter consisting of 430 houses, of Armenian church, presbytery and school. There were also Turkish and Kurdish quarters with a large garrison with its barracks. After the 1915-23 Armenian genocide the Armenian community of the city and its vicinity ceased to exist.
