Mining and metallurgy factories in the Urals provided the money for the wealthy industrialists, Demidovs to build this splendid mansion in 1789-1791. Imposing wrought iron railings and an entrance gate, whose intricately shaped iron pillars are topped with huge marble urns, encloses the beige and white portico on this classically designed house. In the 19th century, the palace belonged to Countess Maria Sologub who was famous for organizing banquets for Moscow's well-known literati. The palace is now the Ushinsky Library, Moscow's largest academic library.
